INVITATION TO A COMPETITION BY THE TOWN OF KÖNIGS WUSTERHAUSEN

Thoughts of the AIG team about the competition entry

The aim of this concept was to reestablish the area’s meaning as a centre because this area (castle and Church of the Holy Cross) signifies the origin of the town. The area around the church square and the palace square – the historical city centre – is to be enlivened and used in many different ways in the future. Due to the remodelling of the building Kirchplatz 17 to become a modern administrative centre of the town and later the town hall, the church square becomes the new centre of the town and therefore gains in importance. A place with which the inhabitants identify more and more is to be created.

The concept contains angles which border the square and make him visible as such. The main part of the concept consists of a three-storey building with a saddleback roof. The plan is to surround the building with a lot of green and open spaces taking up the surrounding structures and opening widely to the castle. Due to the impressively designed entrance area there is some creative scope for development of the construction, e.g. for a future expansion of the building following the axis of the existing buildings or in the west of the land. The new building shall not dwarf the historical ones but back up their effect. The front facing the church square will be delicately divided following the fragmented construction of the square.

The aim and basic thought was to specifically enhance the value of the existing area, to close the unfavourable gap between the buildings and to create, with respect and creativity, a new centre of attraction doing justice to the town of Königs Wusterhausen, the town in the nature.

Office AIG Architects + Engineers + Surveyors planning phases 5-6 as per § 62, 63, 64 Fee Structure for Architects and Engineers (HOAI)

Project description

Complete relocation of a village. The village gave way to the construction site of the future airport of the capital, Berlin Brandenburg International (BBI). The relocation of the village of Diepensee was necessary for the planned extension of the airport. Therefore 7 apartment buildings with 6 or 4 accommodation units (in total 40), 1 apartment block with 9 age-based apartments and 1 business unit, 2 rows of terraced houses with 3 and 5 houses, 9 semidetached houses and 1 detached house have been built within the scope of the apartment building on the site of Deutsch Wusterhausen.

The buildings have been constructed as massive constructions under the terms of the new Energy Saving Regulations (EnEV). The apartment buildings have pitch roofs; the semidetached houses, the terraced houses and the age-based apartment block have saddleback roofs. A combination of plaster façade and a fibre cement panel covering was planned for the façades. All ground floor apartments as well as the 9 apartments in the age-based apartment block have been constructed barrier-free according to the funding guidelines as per DIN 18025 part II.
